BEAUTY AND LUXOR WITH WOOD


Most of the wood carvings done in furniture and accessories are handmade. These are done painstakingly by master craftsmen with a smooth and fine finish. Wood carvings are fine craftwork that evokes a luxurious ambience. These symbolize beauty and talent of extremely high standards. They can fit in anywhere either as traditional decor or cab be easily decorated as contemporary and trendy architectural furniture.
When it comes to the furniture shopping amongst the affluent class, usually carved furniture with fine design tops the list. There are varieties of furniture with exquisite wood carvings on tables, chairs, beds, chests, and desks. Normally, the best suited wood for such intricate craft work is teak or sheesham wood. In some parts of India like Karnataka rosewood is ' used for such work which is very popular. These carved furniture are very popular in Rajasthan and Kashmir where furniture like swings and cabinets are available with or without inlay work.
In countries like Thailand and Indonesia and in parts of India such as Kerala, carved teak houses were common. Of late, these houses are not constructed because of high cost.
Instead mouldings are used t o beautify the interiors. Theses mould-ings are of different types:
Crown mouldings are seen at the junction where the walls meet the ceiling. Frieze mouldings are used at the lintel levels. Panel mouldings are found over the wainscoating. They have design of fruits and flowers or are carved with contemporary designs. Similarly, ceiling medallions, columns, corbels, balusters, door and window trims are all embellished with fine wood carvings. MDF carvings are more common amongst people because of their low cost. These can either be painted or stained. Staircase can be carved and decorated in various ways. well turned wood posts and carved finials give an exquisite finish to the staircase. Added to this latticed wood screens serve as elegant partitions in living spaces. Fireplace mantels, door panels and traditionally carved doors are extremely popular. When it comes to accessories, there is a wide range of carved sandalwood deities and figurines and antique collections such as filigree boxes, table lamps, desktop chest sets, carved animals, lintels, wall brackets etc. These accessories are sometimes painted with vibrant colours and displaced in rural handicrafts.
One must ensure these wooden carvings are termite proof and have a good finishing before buying them
